Yes. Both Groucho2 and the feathered line test now work fine under both
retail and debug builds on i386.
However, the worrying question (at least to me) is "why does turning
on pentium4 optimisation cause a crash on processors which have a P4
compatible instruction set?" (in my case genuine Intel Core Duo). There
must be some underlying gcc bug here. It would be good to know if it
works on say 4.1 with processor-based optimization.

I don't think that this issue was to do with processor optimization,
unless you got an 'undefined instruction' event under GDB. I think it
was just I made an error whilst building the library, now I understand
the autobuild process again I can always produce a good autobuilt library.
