While Debian does distribute the upstream source package as it was used
for building the binaries, it is nice to be able to verify that is
actually the original, unmodified tarball. For that, the md5sum of the
original tarball must not change, as it is recorded in the debian source
description file.
It's not a major issue, but nice to have. At least for the "official"
releases, the released tarball should be save somewhere without
modification.
